Sound symbolic effects of intrinsic pitch and intrinsic intensity in Dutch vowels
نویسنده
چکیده
Listeners associate certain vowels and consonants with specific meanings, known as phonetic/sound symbolism. For example, the vowel // is often associated with small, thin and more female entities compared to the vowel //. Sound symbolism studies so far mainly focused on the effects of intrinsic pitch (F0) of vowels while no research has taken other intrinsic properties, such as intensity, into account. The present research investigates the effect of both intrinsic pitch and intrinsic intensity, which can be directly linked to vowel articulation, on perceptual associations. To this end a production task and a perception experiment have been carried out. The production task elicits read-aloud vowels from which measurements of intrinsic pitch and intrinsic intensity were taken. Results of an articulatory analysis on these measures show that intrinsic pitch and intrinsic intensity correlate negatively. Using a subset of the elicited vowels in the production task, the subsequent perception experiment investigated the effects of intrinsic pitch and intrinsic intensity on associated meanings. Results show that both intrinsic properties contribute to sound symbolism with intrinsic pitch being a stronger cue than intrinsic intensity.

The Power of Words in the Brain: Systematic Sound-Meaning Associations in Novel and Existing Words
In a series of experiments conducted with Dutch native speakers, we explored systematic size/power sound-symbolic associations in novel and existing words. In Experiment 1 (N = 64), participants associated vowel-intrinsic fundamental frequency with size/power, disregarding the modality of stimuli presentation (spoken, written), but depending on the lexical status of the stimulus (more strongly ...
متن کاملIntrinsic Vowel Pitch: A Gradient Feature of Vowel Systems?
This paper investigates the average fundamental frequency of eight peripheral vowels in Belgian Standard Dutch in order to examine whether a vowel gradient exists with respect to Intrinsic Vowel Pitch (IF0). The results show that IF0 exists in Belgian Standard Dutch and amounts to 3.26 semi-tones. It is found that the assumed gradience in the degree of openness/tongue height is only reflected t...

This paper examines intrinsic vowel pitch (IF0) in Moroccan Standard Arabic and Belgian Standard Dutch in order to investigate the hypothesis that IF0 may depend on the size of the vowel inventory. The results of a production task with 11 Moroccan native speakers of Standard Arabic and 10 Belgian native speakers of Dutch reveal that IF0 in Arabic is significantly smaller (1.28 ST) than in Dutch...

Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...
